Review: How I Got Skinny, Famous and Fell Madly in Love by Ken Baker

Synopsis

"Thick. Heavy. Big boned. Plump. Full figured. Chunky. Womanly. Large. Curvy. Plus-size. Hefty." To sixteen-year-old Emery Jackson, these are all just euphemisms for the big "F" word—"fat." Living on a Southern California beach with her workout fiend dad, underwear model sister, and former model mother, it is impossible for Emery not to be aware of her weight.

Emery is okay with how things are. That is, until her "momager" signs her up for Fifty Pounds to Freedom, a reality show in which Emery will have to lose fifty pounds in fifty days in order to win the million dollars that will solve her family's financial woes. Emery is skeptical of the process, but when the pounds start to come off and the ratings skyrocket, she finds it hard to resist the adoration of her new figure and the world of fame. Emery knows that things have changed. But is it for the better?

My Review
How I Got Skinny, Famous and Fell Madly in Love is a truly unique little novel that will appeal to a variety of readers. After all, who doesn't like modern satire on pop culture and more laughs than most of the comedy shows out there. This book is a nonstop blast, but definitely has more depth than one may initially think. The plot line, references and excellent humor only scrape the surface of the book. The themes and heart of How I Got Skinny, Famous and Fell Madly in Love go much further and can allow for connection to just about anyone, as we all deal with expectations of others weighing us down.

The pacing of How I Got Skinny, Famous and Fell Madly in Love is spot on for the majority of the novel. I devoured it in one sitting like a double bacon cheeseburger. Unlike that cheeseburger, I felt great after finishing and it didn't go straight to my thighs. The plot kept moving and I was eager to keep reading. I thought that the ending wrapped a bit quickly, but I did finish the book at one in the morning after reading without pause, so it may have just felt that way to me.

I loved the diary like set up of the novel. Not only does it make sense in the world of the story and the style of the book, but Emery has a fantastic voice. Gut-wrenchingly funny, delightfully sassy and amazingly realistic, it doesn't matter what decisions she made, I can't help but like her. I was definitely a fan, since Emery brought something truly unique to the novel through a perspective that was refreshingly honest. It takes a strong character to connect so easily with a teenage audience. (As a member of the teenage audience, I assure you she does.)
Although it is fiction, How I Got Skinny, Famous and Fell Madly in Love is so real. It doesn't sugarcoat the world or how women are affected by body image. It isn't afraid to show the good, the bad, and the ugly within people, which is fantastic and makes me wan to do a happy dance.
How I Got Skinny, Famous and Fell Madly in Love is a wonderful read. Yes, it appeals to teenagers, but it doesn't only appeal to teenagers. If you live in a world immersed in pop culture (and if you're reading this, I'm assuming you do) then you will fall madly in love too.

Review: The Gondola Maker by Laura Morelli

Synopsis:

From the author of Made in Italy comes a tale of artisanal tradition and family bonds set in one of the world's most magnificent settings: Renaissance Venice.

When Luca Vianello, the heir to a renowned gondola-making enterprise, experiences an unexpected tragedy in the boatyard, he believes that his destiny lies elsewhere. Soon he finds himself drawn to restore an antique gondola with the dream of taking a girl for a ride. Lovers of historical fiction will appreciate the authentic details of gondola craftsmanship, along with an intimate first-person narrative set against the richly textured backdrop of 16th-century Venice.

My Review

The very first moment that I stepped foot in Venice, I was absolutely entranced. The same thing can be said for the first moment that I started reading The Gondola Maker. From chapter one, readers are instantly taken back to the captivating period of Renaissance Venice.

A minor masterpiece in historical fiction, Morelli does not need conflicts of apocalyptic proportions to enthrall readers of all tastes. The plot keeps rolling between love, loss and dramatic suspense that crafts a realistic story and characters with beating hearts.

Luca is a wonderful protagonist and a great voice to speak for all those coming-of-age dreamers today, despite the difference in time. Most all of us can relate to the pressure of family, the possibility of destiny, and the unclear longing of our hearts. Experience Luca's struggles with such helped with the true time traveling aspect of reading.

Morelli did not just draw readers into a story through this novel, but allowed them to plunge headfirst into a new world.

A world of canals lined with the artful gondolas, elegant nobility, forbidden love, and as close to the beautiful side of magic as reality can get.

With a tone that is dark one chapter and light the next, there aren't many slow portions at all. The pages kept turning, although the pacing didn't feel very fast at all.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of reading The Gondola Maker, from the descriptive imagery of making the magnificent boats to every decision and consequence of Luca. It's a ticket to 16th-century Venice, and it's hard not to fall in love.

“The hands of time turn on the face of the sun. Only you can move them. If the Watcher controls the hands of the clock he can go anywhere, past or future-- and destroy our planet.”

Since the days of ancient
Greece, the Argos dynasty has kept a secret, a mystery passed down through their descendants from generation to generation, in the hopes that the forces of good can stop the evil destruction of planet Earth.

Margaret Ingall is harboring that secret. Time is running out for the descendants of the
Argos. They know a great healer and time traveler will be born of their blood. But the only person that knows whom they will call “the soul of the sun” is Margaret’s sister, Abigail. Before she can reveal the healer’s identity, disaster strikes…

Evil stalks them, watching and waiting to find out which member of her family has the ultimate power. Is it Margaret’s own child? Or her beloved granddaughter? Or even herself? Their only clue is a powerful protective amulet that will lead them all in a cat-and-mouse game to discover secrets as ancient as time.

If the Watcher discovers the truth before they do, all will be lost.

Fate, time and love weave together in their struggle to fulfill their destiny. Will Margaret’s fears sabotage her family’s protection? Can the healer accept her gifts in time? And once the soul of the sun is finally revealed, will it be too late?

Her power is incredible. The sacrifices required of her are immense.

Will it be enough to stop the Watcher?

Excerpt:

The rain fell in sheets around me, it was gloomy and depressing, but I didn’t feel a drop. I was completely encased in light; I was a moving, breathing, flaming yellow orb that no one could penetrate. I watched in amazement as my broken leg instantly healed and the torn pajama fabric cinched itself back together. My jaw pain ceased. I closed my hands over the amulet, now humming with intensity. In a split second, I was vibrating with the same power. The wind picked up and the sky loomed black. The moon lay dark behind an inky sky and somehow strange chanting words flowed out of me. Lava hot and fraught with meaning, they rose to a fever pitch. Every word was a part of me, part of my being. Words from another time, Tanga’s time, slipped from my lips as though it were my native tongue. It was the inscription on the amulet, of that much I was sure.

I stretched my glowing hands out to Thomas.

I call on you Lady Isis.

Protect Me.

For I am the one, the Soul of the Sun.

I plead with you and your son Horus to give refuge.

Patroness of Nature and Magic bring all my power and your power together to glorify
what is right and true in this world.

Honor your name and those we safeguard from harm. Let time be taken from no man.

Amen.”

He was laughing at me.

“You stupid little twit, did you honestly think that would work? You think that I can’t take what’s mine?”

As he spoke, I chanted the same words, repeating them over and over. I saw fear cross his face just for a moment when he realized I was using the amulet’s power. A brilliant beam of light continued to radiate from my core. It was strange, the light now shone gold instead of blue. It must have changed when it sealed together. I continued to watch and to my astonishment, he became transparent and, with a puff of smoke, evaporated into the heavens. I could hear his heart-rending screams echoing through the ocean’s storm. Drained completely of energy, I crumpled, exhausted, onto the sand.

Review: The Silver Sickle by Ellie Anne (Tour Stop)

Synopsis

The end of humanity will come through the Silver Sickle . . .

Farissa lives every moment with reckless abandon, for it may be her last. Any day now, the alien goddesses will harvest her and take her to the mysterious Silver Sickle, never to return. She’s accepted that. What she can’t accept is this new idea of freedom Zel has planted in her head. She’d give almost anything to be with Zel, but how can she run from her destiny if it means putting the whole kingdom in danger?

Everyone in the desert kingdom believes the goddesses are immortal, but Zel has invented a way to kill them. Now all he has to do is convince Farissa to run away with him and plant a seed of hope in her heart that she’s not destined to die. Little does he know that one seed of hope could change the course of the future.

My Review

There aren't many books out there like The Silver Sickle, and it is part of the reason why I loved it so much. I mean, sure, there are plenty of revenge stories. But are there plenty of stories involving a girl wanting to gain revenge on an alien species that the human race treats as deities, and the leader of that race also wants revenge on this girl because they both have lost someone important to them?

Definitely not.

But it's awesome.

Plot is not normally my favorite factor in reading, but it is hard not to fall in love with the story of The Silver Sickle. It is a fantastic high-concept science fiction tale of adventure, action, romance, revenge, and just about everything else you can possibly ask for. (And yes, producers, it would make a great movie.) I could not put down the book for long, and if I did at all, I immediately had to return to the story to know what would happen next. Every chapter kept the story rolling, even if there were not any big surprises or twisted turns, I still was eager to turn the pages.

I loved (loved, loved) the world that was created in The Silver Sickle. From the very beginning, the reader is transported into this dark setting. Through great imagery and description, the entire situation forms quickly. The Amar held both terror and mystique in their image that highly intrigued me, especially as I learned more of their individual characters. But the real gem of this world, in my opinion, were the cogsmen. I could envision them clearly in my mind, and the steampunk fan within me had a field day. Despite the uniform brotherhood between them, they had unique personalities and proved to be a truly incredible race.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the build of the plot, there were certain parts that seemed to rush by a bit quickly. Mostly that happened toward the end with certain minor characters, so it wasn't that big of a deal, but the rush with the girls in the Silver Sickle seemed almost comical. (I'm desperately trying not to ruin anything - as I believe this is a novel that readers should purchase - so I apologize for being vague.) Also, there were times in which things felt a bit too convenient, but that seems to be the case in plenty of stories, and sometimes that's even more realistic than extreme difficulties. Life can be funny like that. It would have been nice to see a little bit more of the technology available. The trackers on the girls were only briefly mentioned, even though the girls have to deal with them throughout their lives. Zel was a mechanical genius, but we didn't see much of his past work and only had a little on the shockwheel. This didn't take away from the story by any means, nor should the tech explanations have gone overboard, but I found myself interested.

The characters of The Silver Sickle were all unique and interesting, and I was glad to read from the different point of views so I could get to know all the different point of views. Farissa was a strong role model to have, and her relationship with Zel was incredibly sweet. (I liked the fact that they've known each other. I'm not saying that I don't like instalove, but it's nice to have something that...well...isn't.) Gira was an excellent antagonist. In fact, she was actually quite likeable. She wasn't evil, she was just trying to do what was best for her race, even if there will be sacrifices needed. Even her revenge was understandable. I've always been fond of villains with redeeming factors. And alien goddesses?

Awesome.

The Silver Sickle is a wonderful read. Fans of science fiction definitely need to give this one a try. Even if you're not a fan of sci-fi, try it out anyway. What have you got to lose?

Did I mention action? And aliens? And cogsmen??

(If you don't know what that means, it's only more reason to check out this book.)

Review: The Dark World by Cara Lynn Shultz

Synopsis
Paige Kelly is used to weird--in fact, she probably corners the market on weird, considering that her best friend, Dottie, has been dead since the 1950s. But when a fire demon attacks Paige in detention, she has to admit that things have gotten out of her league. Luckily, the cute new boy in school, Logan Bradley, is a practiced demon slayer-and he isn't fazed by Paige's propensity to chat with the dead. Suddenly, Paige is smack in the middle of a centuries-old battle between warlocks and demons, learning to fight with a magic sword so that she can defend herself. And if she makes one wrong move, she'll be pulled into the Dark World, an alternate version of our world that's overrun by demons-and she might never make it home.

My Review
If you are considering reading The Dark World, I must give you warning. The Dark World is a drug of Young Adult fiction. From the first couple of pages, I found myself drawn deeper and deeper into the world. Soon enough, I had the book at my side at all times. I was reading between classes, sneaking reading during classes, reading while eating, procrastinating on homework and staying up past my bedtime to keep the pages turning. Even after finishing the book (which, thankfully, only took two days), my thoughts drifted back to the novel - as they did during the hours in which I couldn't read. There's not many ways to put it, and it was like a lust demon hid within the pages to hypnotize me into submission. I was addicted. Completely hooked to the point of knowing what I liked, but not knowing why I liked it so much. What made The Dark World so intriguing to me?

Was it the plot, perhaps? The Dark World is the story of a teenage girl, Paige, who gets her eyes roughly opened. Not only are there demons and warlocks and "ghosts", but there's an entirely new world - parallel to our own - in which they stay. Unless, of course, they manage to cross over to our world. That's a cool concept, especially the dark world part. I mean, I've seen plenty of demons in fiction, but a creepy, underworld-esque version of New York only a painful portal trip away? Awesome. Not only is that basic logline pretty killer, but the pacing is great and twists keep coming. There was one particular moment that took me for surprise, but that's all I'll say about it. The novel succeeded in being a major page turner, but is that enough to feed the obsession I gained? Being as I'm not too much of a plot person, I don't think that's it.

It could have been the characters. Paige was definitely interesting. Again, an outcast protagonist isn't exactly new, but I can't say I've often seen a character gain this reputation because her ability to speak with spirits makes her seem insane. But what really sold me on enjoying her as a character is her personality in spite of that. Most YA outcasts tend to be filled with overwhelming angst and pent-up sexual aggression. I'm not saying that combination never works out, but it is refreshing to have an outcast who - despite a bit of social awkwardness and romantic insecurity - has a great sense of humor and a willingness to take the world head on. Her entertaining point of view only added to the story. Speaking of adding to the story, I can't write a review of The Dark World without at least mentioning Logan Bradley. I won't go into detail about this character because I'm writing a review and not a novel. However, I can assure that he's everything you're looking for in a fictional romantic interest and will very likely contribute to your increased disappointment in reality (which doesn't help with the addictive quality, that's for sure). Even the supporting characters, like Travis and Ajax, are very well-developed with unique personalities.

Of course, it is said that every story has already been told, and I am a firm believer that the majority of the story is in the way it's told. Fortunately, The Dark World is well written and highly entertaining. I laughed, I teared up, I swooned at every other thing that Logan said or did...the reading experience was an adventure in itself. The beginning was a bit cliche but it quickly gravitated away from that. (And all the swoony parts definitely didn't hurt.)

I suppose that it's most likely a combination of all these factors, as well as others, that had me devouring this novel like a good slice of NY pizza. I can easily recommend The Dark World to YA paranormal fans without question. Now, however, I have to get help for this minor obsession - or, at least, find a new fiction addiction to keep me occupied until book two.

Review: When Implausible Events Occur by Lucia Morosanu

Synopsis

Love...What is it all about? Nobody really knows, but everybody has an opinion and a story. And this is the story of a boy named Alex and a girl named Diana and how a series of highly implausible events changed their relationship forever: and made for an interesting self-discovery journey.

My Review

This is the first short story that I'm reviewing on this blog, and it was very fun to return to this type of writing and get a little glimpse into a moment of time. When Implausible Events Occur is a lovely short read that manages to be both dark and warm depending on the moment.
Set at the tail end of a long relationship, the story follows Diana struggling to realize what she actually wants and how she really feels, as she relives memories of her time with Alex while trying to move on with her own life. The thing that I loved the most about this story is how real it felt. Sure, there wasn't an entirely new world or the impossible happening, but it held the everyday chaos of life and the inevitable implausibilities that we are all subject to. Despite it's short length, When Implausible Events Occur is able to convey how small this world really is, and just how many times two lives can have their paths cross. In addition, I loved the emotional responses of the story. They never felt fake, and the reality of them affects the reader by setting a similar mood.

In a way, the story seemed longer than it actually was, and I don't mean that in a negative way. Between being wrapped up in the easier past of Alex and Die as well as the harsh present, I felt that I knew their story so well, I must have invested a lot of time into reading - when, in reality, I was able to devour the story in one sitting.

As the synopsis of When Implausible Events Occur brushes on, the themes of the story are absolutely wonderful. Whether it be the fact that we can't predict life because of all the implausible events or trying to figure out what love really means, they are conflicts that all of us face, or will face soon enough.

I really enjoyed the dark beauty of When Implausible Events Occur, a story that can stay on the reader's mind a fair amount afterward. Although a light read in size, the layers beneath are anything but. It's definitely one to consider checking out.
